On September 25, 2004 Camp Columbia held its first ever Family Fun Fair at UVic Child Care Services. It was a huge success according to the 220 people in attendance. Our goal was to raise awareness of Camp.
It was no small feat pulling this fair off and it couldn't have been done without the hard work and dedication of the over 50 volunteers that came out in support of this great family event. There are many people I would like to say thank you to:
- the fundraising and marketing committee members & the Camp Columbia Board
- Ian Gibbs and the youth groups who did an absolutely awesome job of the games and prizes, face painting, popcorn, and cotton candy. We got a lot of positive feedback about the games. Many people also commented about how well the youth interacted with the children, which particularly warmed my heart
as these children may become future campers at Camp Columbia.
- Peggy Wilmot and her youth groups who did such a fantastic job with the cake walk. Thanks to them,
we were able to offer a really nice selection of beautifully decorated cupcakes for the walk as well.
- Carol Peterson for organizing the bake sale and the MANY people who donated baked goods. We were
truly blessed with the many yummy baked goods we received. A big thanks goes out to Margaret Gibbs
for taking care of the bake sale table on Saturday.
- Darryl (Camp Director) for all of his help with planning Thanks for your help and support.
Al and Dianne Marks for their help and support.
- Janet Power who did a wonderful job with the colorful posters.
- Sean Collyer for his help with planning, picking up food and supplies, picking up bbq, cooking at the
fair, set-up and take down, organizing clowns for the event, and so much more.
- We had over fifty volunteers come out on Friday & Saturday to help out, donating 200 hours
Thank you, thank you, thank you! The success of this event really depended a lot on
volunteers and I can honestly say I was in awe at the number of people who turned out to lend
their support.
I would also like to extend a huge thanks to the following companies and individuals who donated product and services to this event:
- UVic Child Care Services, Thrifty Foods Broadmead, Island Farms Farmer Vicki & Daisy the Cow, Save on Foods, McDonald's Restaurants. Level Ground Trading Company, Vision Gear, Creative Children, Par-t-Perfect, Pat Carfra 'The Lullaby Lady', St. John's, Victoria & clowns Bittee and Rainbow.
Thank you to everyone who did such a great job with advertising the fair:
- CH TV - GO Magazine! Family Fun Report. Times Colonist Community Connections
- 103.1 Jack FM. Greater Victoria Public Libraries. Uvic, Diocesan Post & Anglican Churches
I truly enjoyed working with everyone on this Fun Fair and would like to see it continue as an annual event. We had lots of positive feedback from the families who attended and filled out an Exit Survey. With the first one behind us, we can now work to make them even better year after year.
I can't say thank you enough for all the hard work and support that came from so many places.
(Editors - Hats off to Terri who made this whole thing possible!)
