News Archives: 2002
WORK WEEKEND (FALL '02) We had another successful work weekend with several summer 2002 staff and a few board members showing up for the fun. A big burn pile was made gigantic, and a lot of painting was achieved, amongst some other duties that were equally as important. A big THANK-YOU to those who helped out this weekend. Make sure you stay in tune for the next work weekend. EVERYONE IS WELCOME TO COME AND HELP!! Have a look at some pictures: NORTH ISLAND FUNDRAISER - Sept 28th Campbell River Campbell River is truly a wonderful community! The Camp Columbia supporters there put together a fundraising event that touched the Soul. Working from the joy of Camp our Campbell River hosts put together a Ice Cream Sundae spectatular! Complete with tons of toppings that had the child in us all reaching for the Smarties! After Sundaes Janet Power spoke about "Catching fire for Christ" vision that Bishop Coleman voiced was his wish for all that came to Camp Columbia. It is the fire of Christ that lights us all and sharing this experience at Camp is what makes it so special. The event also included a lively Auction where someone was able to "walk" away with some award winning Camp Columbia stilts for only $35! What a deal!! The Live and Silent Auctions included some beautiful artwork, many hand made articles, and donations from local businesses. These were all well sought after and we would like to truly thank Campbell River for putting together such a successful event. Over $2,000 was raised for Camp!
THANK YOU OPEN HOUSE - September 7th at Camp With all of the Glorious weather this September has brought. The Sun has been shining at Camp Columbia. We had Sunshine all around for September 7 our OPEN HOUSE at Camp! It was wonderful to see so many new and old friends of Camp out to Celebrate with us. This year Camp turned 55 years old! With many friends in attendance we cut the Birthday cake and shared stories of our experiences at camp. We had someone there that had been to the Camp in 1947 as well as Campers from 2002. Visitors were able to experience a "Slice of Life at Camp" by joining in singing, crafts, and even a few courageous canoers. For those looking to enjoy the serenity of camp there were guided walking tours, Susie's great food, and off course that View!
We would love to see many more people join us next year as we Celebrate 56 years! CAMP COLUMBIA DAY SUCCESS - by Janet Power Camp Columbia Day on May 5,2002 was celebrated in many unique ways in our Diocese. I know of many challenges issued to enjoy a hotdog roast with proceeds going to Camp Columbia. Thank-you to St. Paul's in Nanaimo, Holy Trinity in Sooke, St. Andrew's in Cowichan Station and the Cathedral in Victoria for rising to this challenge. St. George's in Cadboro Bay designated their May special offering envelope for parishioners to give towards Camp. In a similar fashion St. John's in Cobble Hill encouraged parishioners to give offerings of all kinds. As well as money their parishioners offered up their stories of camp. Mary Jickling's experiences at camp reached all the way back to 1947! Peter Holmes remembered lots of amusing and touching stories from his years as a 'chiefy' (team leader). All of the many ways in which we as a congregation of churches within our Diocese support Camp Columbia are valued. Congratulations to everyone who caught onto this idea. We look forward to another Camp Columbia Day in 2003. Remember it has now been designated as the first Sunday in May.
Please continue to keep the Campers, Volunteers and Staff of Camp Columbia in your prayers. CAMP COLUMBIA DAY - 5th May 2002 Camp Columbia faces a new future! - A future that will require your love, commitment, and financial support. There are many within this Diocese who know and love Camp Columbia, many who have fond memories from Childhood, and yet still more who have not yet had the opportunity to be a part of this amazing ministry within our Diocese. The Diocese of British Columbia has set aside the 1st Sunday of May each year to become Camp Columbia Day. A day to Celebrate! > The purpose of this day is two fold: a) The first purpose is to set this day apart for prayer, celebration, and awareness. Pew leaflets, prayer requests, songs, and theme ideas, will be sent to encourage you as a parish to focus on and uplift the ministry of Camp Columbia within our Diocese.
b) The second purpose is to give Parishes a focal day/ month in which to give financially to Camp. This is not to say that Camp does not need financial support all year round but
on this day special events could be held to support this vital ministry, for example a 'Wear a camp shirt to church and give a donation Day' - similar to jeans day. Youth groups
could fundraise for camp: Maybe a donut bake off, a Ferdie-a-thon, a camp thermometer to track the donationsthe sky's the limit! SILENT AUCTION NEWS - 19th Feb 2002 On behalf of Camp Columbia, we would like to thank everyone who came out and supported the Silent Auction Dinner ∓ Dance on February 15th, at Christ Church Cathedral. It was a huge success with funds raised close to our goal of $10,000. Many people came to support Camp Columbia and we thank you all - all of the people who donated items or time for the auction, all of the volunteers both young and 'less young', Gibbs Gourmet Catering for the excellent food and service, the board members, in particular Dianne and Al Marks who headed the event, and especially all those who came, ate, bid, danced, and had a great time. Thank you everyone! |
